Summary "Begins in 1915, in Austria/Hungary, when Rositha L., is born. By the time she is seven, WWI has changed the map, so that her Slovenian family now lives in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. She is one of six children growing up on a farm with a view of the azure waters of Lake Bled and a backdrop of Alpine ranges where she plays with her sheep. Their family has icons of Jesus over every door and a deep commitment to each other. Rositha grows to be a statuesque woman with light brown hair. She finishes school and is qualified to teach, but as her mind turns to her future, the drone of Hitler's planes can be heard rumbling over those mountain tops. By this time her eldest brother, Andrej, has joined the King's Royal Guard in Belgrade, and the idyllic, rugged, agrarian life of this family changes with the speed of an earthquake and with a similar instability. Rositha and her youngest sister, Vilma, flee to London where their accents are mistaken for German, as they hunt for employment and huddle with strangers during the blitz. Rositha finally obtains a service position with Lord and Lady Wedgewood, and Vilma, must flee Belgrade where she has traveled with her new employer's family. Simultaneously, Andrej is captured by the Nazis and held in a POW work camp under harsh conditions. The remaining siblings also must survive challenging circumstances"--Back cover.
