Summary Published in 1881 and revised in 1892, The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass is the third autobiography written by Douglass. Because of the emancipation of American slaves following the American Civil War, Douglass was able to give more details about his life as a slave than he could in his previous two works, since those details would have put him and his family in danger. Douglass also recounts details of his life during the Civil War, including conversations with American presidents Lincoln and Garfield and his service as the United States Marshall of the District of Columbia. This edition includes numerous illustrations of important people and events in Douglass' narrative.
