Summary Just by asking for a glass of water, gentle, searching Yslea enters the lives of four people living in three dilapidated row houses along the train tracks outside of Memphis. When Jimmy sends her inside to get it herself, Yslea stays, and becomes the caretaker of Rose, who lives in the shack next door, by promising to dress the old woman when she dies. In exchange, Yslea learns about "some kinds of happiness and some kinds of hurt that change with the season." In the third shack live the solitary Layla and her small daughter Ambrosia. Layla works for Jimmy. Ambrosia, who doesn't speak, rocks on the porch while slowly turning the pages of her little cardboard Book of Colors, the only thing she seems to notice besides Jesus the donkey and the quieted rattlesnake up under her porch. Together, they become Yslea's hardscrabble family with all the difficult heartfelt chaos that word implies today.--from back cover.
