Summary "This volume is the report of a five-year research program directed at the evaluation of techniques for the selection of professional personnel. More specifically, the project was concerned with the selection of graduate students for training in a four-year doctoral program in clinical psychology. It is believed, however, that both the methods of investigation and the resulting findings will be of interest to those concerned with the selection of other groups of professional students. And, although the primary object of the project was that of evaluating selection procedures, we believe that many of the findings will also be of interest to psychologists not immediately concerned with the problems of selection. Although the results relative to the selection of clinical psychologists are believed to be of some importance, they may ultimately be of less significance than other findings herein reported. This was not only a study of the selection of students for clinical psychology; it was also an evaluation of the predictive value--for one situation--of a number of the more widely used diagnostic techniques of clinical psychology, including the clinician as a diagnostic instrument. In still another sense, it surveys the training program for and the present practices of clinical psychology. We believe that certain of our findings have potential relevance to the future planning and administration of graduate training programs while other findings point to needed research on the efficacy of current practices. Finally, we believe that some of the methods which were developed within the project may prove useful to other investigators in the design of a wide range of researches in clinical psychology"--Preface.
