Summary Originally written in 1709, this lengthy work gives a detailed analysis of the history of the union between the kingdoms of England and Scotland. Defoe was a staunch supporter of the 1707 Act of Union, which formally united the kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain. He wrote this work to show that the two kingdoms had already been united since 1604, when Scotland's King James IV was crowned as England's King James I. In addition to the book, Defoe authored numerous newspaper articles and pamphlets in support of the Act of Union.
