Summary |
Originally published in 1562, Arthur Brooke'sℓThe Tragical History of Romeus and Julietℓwas the primary source of inspiration for Shakespeare's famous dramatic tragedy,ℓRomeo and Juliet. Brooke is thought to have translated the Italian story from a novella by Matteo Bandello published sometime in the early 16th century. While the plots of Brooke's translation and Shakespeare's play are very similar, Brooke's ending differs drastically from that in Shakespeare's play. |
