On December 3, the ship arrived into Hobart. While the book looks at the lives of all the women, it focuses on two women in particular; Eliza Davis, who was transported from Wicklow Gaol, where she was for life for infanticide, having had her sentence commuted from death; and Margaret Butler, sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing potatoes in Carlow. What emerges is a picture of the reality of transportation, together with the legacy left by these women in Tasmania, and asks the question about whether this Draconian punishment was, for some, a life-saving measure. 538 System requirements: Adobe Digital editions. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Prisoners|xTransportation|zAustralia|zTasmania|xHistory |y19th century. 650 0 Reformatories for women|zAustralia|zTasmania|xHistory |y19th century. 650 0 Convict labor|zAustralia|zTasmania|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Women prisoners|zIreland|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Women prisoners|zAustralia|zTasmania|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Penal transportation|zAustralia|zTasmania|xHistory|y19th century. 650 7 HISTORY / Australia & New Zealand.|2bisacsh 651 0 Tasmania|xHistory|y1803-1900. 655 0 Electronic books. 700 1 Snowden, Dianne,|eillustrator. 700 1 McAleese, Mary,|ewriter of foreword. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKavanagh, Joan.|tVan Diemen's women. |dDublin, Ireland The History Press Ireland, 2015. |z9781845888855|w(DLC)2015463643 914 frd00011308
