Summary The CT radium orphan sources site is located at a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection laboratory at 9 Windsor Ave., Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. On March 9, 2016, EPA coordinators Mike Barry, Natalie McClaine, and other staff were mobilized to the laboratory in Windsor and met with staff there regarding radioactive materials from the 1920's or 1930's that had been retrieved from a private estate owned by Ms Marian Larkin in Middlebury, CT. These materials were originally provided to physicians by the US government to assist physicians in the treatment of cancer. The sources would have been used for directing radiation to shrink cancerous tumors which could then be surgically removed. Ms Larkin's father and grandfather had both been physicians and their equipment as well as many chemicals had been recently discovered in a room within the residence. Ms Larkin had hired a private contractor to remove the chemicals and equipment while performing renovations, but when a box that was placarded as containing radioactive materials was discovered the contractor referred her to CT DEEP.
