But his story is also unique: as a member of two controversial committees that oversaw the forced sale of the property of Japanese Canadians in Vancouver during the Second World War, Kimura participated in the dispossession of his own community. In Witness to Loss, Kimura's previously unknown memoir--written in the last years of his life--is translated from Japanese to English and published for the first time. This remarkable document chronicles a history of racism in British Columbia, describes the activities of the committees on which Kimura served, and seeks to defend his actions. Diverse reflections of leading historians, sociologists, and a community activist and educator who lived through this history give context to the memoir, inviting readers to grapple with a rich and contentious past. More complex than just hero or villain, oppressor or victim, Kimura raises important questions about the meaning of resistance and collaboration and the constraints faced by an entire generation. Illuminating the difficult, even impossible, circumstances that confronted the victims of racist state action in the mid-twentieth century, Witness to Loss reminds us that the challenge of understanding is greater than that of judgment."--|cProvided by publisher. 546 Includes English translation of Kishizo Kimura's memoir. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription MasterFILE Reference Collection 600 10 Kimura, Kishizo,|d1899-1976. 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Racism|zBritish Columbia|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Eviction|zBritish Columbia|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Japanese Canadians|zBritish Columbia|vBiography. 650 0 Japanese Canadians|zBritish Columbia|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Japanese Canadians|yEvacuation and relocation, 1942-1945. 650 7 HISTORY|zCanada|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Eviction.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00917169 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 Racism.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01086616 651 0 British Columbia|xRace relations|xHistory|y20th century. 651 7 British Columbia.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205265 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Sugiman, Pamela H.|q(Pamela Haruchiyo),|d1958-|eeditor. 700 1 Stanger-Ross, Jordan,|eeditor. 776 1 |tWitness to loss.:|dMontreal ; Kingston ; London ; Chicago : McGill-Queen's University Press, [2017] ©2017 |kMcGill-Queen's studies in ethnic history.
