This Casebook and its predecessors have been developed with that focus clearly in mind. Each of the cases in this Casebook is drawn from the files of the APA Ethics Committee, and they are carefully disguised versions of actual decisions made by the Committee, the APA governance group charged with both overseeing the code and its enforcement. Each case describes the background of the complaint, how the case was adjudicated, and what sanctions, if any, were invoked. It is expected that this Casebook, like earlier ones, would furnish precedents for the Association, for future APA Ethics Committees, and for state and local ethics committees of psychologists; in addition, it would not only continue to serve an educative function for the profession as a whole but also document the efforts of the Association to police its own house.
