As soon as Gerry Porter and her granddaughter, Maddie, 11, land in New York City, there are signs of trouble. Gerry is pulled in opposite directions by her two friends: Cynthia Bishop, who wants Gerry to investigate her aunt's recent death; and Bebe Mellon, who expects Gerry to spend the week helping her fulfill a work assignment at a giant crafts fair. Gerry and Maddie manage to keep everyone happy, accomplishing what the 35,000-strong NYPD failed to do.
