Scotland Yard inspectors Tom Pollard and Gregory Toye investigate the death of eccentric spinster Ethel Ridd, who had recently publicly accused the residents of the peaceful village of Ambercombe of stealing a jeweled chalice which had belonged to the recently deceased vicar of the village.
