This book presents an ethnographic study of how grassroots activism in Venezuela during the Chávez presidency can be understood in relation to the country's history as a petro-state. Taking the contested relationship between the popular sectors and the Venezuelan state as a point of departure, Iselin Åsedotter Strønen explores how notions such as class, race, state, bureaucracy, popular politics, capitalism, neoliberalism, consumption, oil wealth, and corruption gained salience in the Bolivarian process. A central argument is that the Bolivarian process was an attempt to challenge the practices, ideas, and values inherited from Venezuela's historical development as an oil-producing state. Drawing on rich ethnographic material from Caracas' shantytowns, state institutions, as well as everyday life and public culture, Strønen explores the complexities and challenges in fostering deep social and political change. 590 SpringerLink|bSpringer Nature Open Access eBooks 648 7 Since 1900|2fast 650 0 Political culture|zVenezuela. 650 0 Political participation|zVenezuela. 650 0 Petroleum industry and trade|xPolitical aspects |zVenezuela. 650 0 Political corruption|zVenezuela. 650 7 Social Science|xSociology|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Sociology.|2bicssc 650 7 Regional studies.|2bicssc 650 7 Oil industries.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01044641 650 7 Political participation.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01069386 650 7 Politics and government.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919741 651 0 Venezuela|xPolitics and government|y1999- 651 7 Venezuela.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204166 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aStrønen, Iselin Åsedotter, 1980- |tGrassroots politics and oil culture in Venezuela.|dCham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, [2017]|z9783319595061 |w(DLC) 2017945573|w(OCoLC)1004778315 914 on1012438264 994 92|bSTJ
