A complete biography of Saint Peter in narrative poem form, this volume was originally published in 1909. The Catholic Church holds that Peter was the first pope, citing the story from the Book of Matthew in the New Testament. When Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." In turn, Jesus declares Peter to be "blessed" and declares: "On this rock, I will build my church." Scholars believe the "rock" to which Christ referred was Peter. |
