Summary |
"The purpose of this book is to increase awareness and understanding of the regulation and ethical practice of professional psychology in the United States and Canada. Regulation of the profession of psychology in the United States and Canada is a complex and multifaceted process involving a combination of legislatively mandated credentialing and discipline by regulatory bodies along with voluntary credentialing and discipline associated with an individual's participation in a professional society. The chapters that follow describe the common variations in the educational preparation and credentialing of psychologists as well as the common disciplinary processes employed by psychology regulatory bodies in the United States and Canada. In addition, the book compares the codes of ethics and professional conduct from the major psychology professional associations, describes the most frequent areas of disciplinary complaints against psychologists, and presents a model for maintaining ethical principles in daily practice. The book also addresses the disciplinary process and the growing concern among practicing psychologists with the civil and criminal liability they may face when presented with a complaint. This book is also intended for practicing psychologists to increase their understanding of the rationale and methodology of psychology regulation and to increase their awareness of common areas of professional misconduct"--Introduction.
