After proving it could host a well-organized Olympic Games with the highly successful 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece suggested it could organize and host the games every four years. Because Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the International Olympic Committee and "father of the modern Olympics," objected to this plan, the IOC then planned to hold intermediate games in Athens between the internationally organized games every four years. Held in 1906, the "Second International Olympic Games in Athens" (now largely known as the Intercalated Games) were quite successful compared to the 1900 and 1904 Olympic Games, which had both been overshadowed by adjacent international exhibitions. Though medals awarded at the 1906 Olympics are no longer officially recognized by the IOC, a glance at this guide to the games offers a glimpse at this fascinating and largely-forgotten chapter in Olympic history. |
