Kris Fallon brings together the emergence of several key media forms--social networking and crowdsourcing, video games and virtual environments, big data and data visualization--and demonstrates the formative influence of political conflict and the documentary film tradition on their evolution and cultural integration. Fallon argues that the ideological rifts of the period inspired the adoption and adaptation of newly available technologies toward social mobilization and political action, a role played for much of the last century by independent documentary film. By focusing on particular moments of political rupture where prior forms of representation and persuasion were discarded or discredited, Fallon asserts that "truth" now lies in a new set of media forms and discursive practices, standards that implicitly shape the documentation of everything from widespread cultural spectacles like wars and presidential elections to more invisible or isolated phenomena like the Abu Ghraib torture scandal or the "fake news" debates of 2016. Positioning documentary film and digital media side by side in the political sphere, this work deeply engages with both contemporary and historical precedents"-- Provided by publisher. 546 English. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 648 7 2000-2099|2fast 650 0 Digital media|xPolitical aspects|zUnited States|y21st century. 650 0 Documentary mass media|zUnited States|y21st century. 650 0 Mass media|xObjectivity|zUnited States|y21st century. 650 0 Online social networks|xPolitical aspects|y21st century. 650 7 Films, cinema.|2bicssc 650 7 Media studies.|2bicssc 650 7 Politics & government.|2bicssc 650 7 PERFORMING ARTS / Film / Genres / Documentary.|2bisacsh 650 7 Digital media|xPolitical aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01983619 650 7 Documentary mass media.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00896092 650 7 Mass media|xObjectivity.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01011271 650 7 Online social networks|xPolitical aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01983801 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 776 08 |iPrint version:|z9780520300934 914 on1108793216 994 92|bCKE
