In 1895, the New York newspapers drew attention to a woman who rode the country pedaling. Annie Londonderry had left home to win a bet: travel the world by bicycle in exchange for five thousand dollars. That was not just a physical and geographical feat: it was challenging the conventions of the epoch. And even though the media were more interested in signaling that she wore pants instead of a skirt, Annie kept pedaling. Her story, along with that of thirteen other women, constitutes this book. Among them is Eva Dickson, the first woman to cross the Sahara by car; Valentina Tereshkova, who flew to space, and Mary Anning, known for her numerous findings of the Jurassic period. Explorers, scientists, climbers, but especially pioneers, went around the world, had to disguise themselves as men, crossed hills, skies and stars to get where they wanted. They were women who moved mountains.
