Summary The Gettysburg Address is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. Delivered by President Lincoln during the American Civil War after the Union Army defeated the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg, the address reiterates the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and proclaims the Civil War as a struggle to preserve the Union. Despite the speech's prominent place in the history of the nation, the precise wording and location of the address are under dispute. The five known manuscripts of the Gettysburg Address differ in a number of details, and modern scholarship locates the speaker's platform 40 yards away from the spot marked in the Soldier's National Cemetery near the battlefield.
