Hayes explore the remarkable life and achievements of Increase Lapham (1811- 1875). Lapham's ability to observe, understand, and meticulously catalog the natural world marked all of his work, from his days as a teenage surveyor on the Erie Canal to his last great contribution as state geologist. Self-taught, Lapham mastered botany, geology, archaeology, limnology, mineralogy, engineering, meteorology, and cartography. A prolific writer, his 1844 guide to the territory was the first book published in Wisconsin. Asked late in life which field of science was his specialty, he replied simply, "I am studying Wisconsin." Lapham identified and preserved thousands of botanical specimens. He surveyed and mapped Wisconsin's effigy mounds. He was a force behind the creation of the National Weather Service, lobbying for a storm warning system to protect Great Lakes sailors. Told in compelling detail through Lapham's letters, journals, books, and articles, Studying Wisconsin chronicles the life and times of Wisconsin's pioneer citizen-scientist"--|cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 600 10 Lapham, Increase Allen,|d1811-1875. 600 17 Lapham, Increase Allen,|d1811-1875.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00012851 650 0 Natural history|zWisconsin. 650 0 Botanists|zWisconsin|vBiography. 650 0 Naturalists|zWisconsin|vBiography. 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY|xScience & Technology.|2bisacsh 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY|xHistorical.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xMidwest (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI)|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|x19th Century.|2bisacsh 650 7 SCIENCE|xHistory.|2bisacsh 650 7 NATURE|xPlants|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 SCIENCE|xLife Sciences|xBotany.|2bisacsh 650 7 Botanists.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00836862 650 7 Natural history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01034268 650 7 Naturalists.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01034543 651 7 Wisconsin.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204595 655 7 Biography.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423686 700 1 Hayes, Paul G. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBergland, Martha, 1945-|tStudying Wisconsin|z9780870206481|w(DLC) 2013036967 |w(OCoLC)863801450 914 ocn884726112 994 92|bGTK
