Summary This early volume ofℓLittle Lord Fauntleroy,ℓthe first children's novel by FrancesℓHodgsonℓBurnett, features illustrations by Reginald Birch.ℓOriginally published as a serial in St. Nicholas Magazine from November 1885 to October 1886, the novel tells the story of a young boy named Cedric Errol who lives in poverty with his mother, a woman known only as "Dearest." Because his father and uncles died suddenly, Cedric is surprisingly bestowed the title of Lord Fauntleroy, heir to the Earldom. The current Earl (Cedric's grandfather) wishes for Cedric to leave his mother and live with him in the vast estate. Cedric leaves his home and learns the ways of English aristocracy, teaching the Earl about kindness and compassion in turn. After its release, the novel gave birth to the American children's fashion trend of the "Fauntleroy suit," a velvet outfit for young boys described extensively in the story.
