Weissenberg is known for his unromantic view of the Jewish shtetl and in this, his most renowned novella, Weissenberg not only shows the poverty and depravity of the shtetl, but also describes how the revolutionary ideas that were popular in the cities resonated among the poor Jewish townsfolk.
