But the two countries have not always been rivals. Both before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution, shared geopolitical interests led to years of pragmatic policies and, at times, extensive cooperation. But the growing rivalry between them has intensified in recent years, particularly with the rise of principlist (fundamentalist) leaders in Iran and the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. Israeli leaders now view every regional threat through the prism of Iran, even if their strategic community is divided about how to address this challenge and particularly the utility of a military strike option. Iran, which currently views Israel in more ideological and less pragmatic terms, may be emboldened to further challenge Israel if it has a nuclear weapons capability. The United States can help manage this rivalry by focusing on policies aimed at prevention and preparation. This means discouraging an Israeli military strike while bolstering Israeli capabilities in preparation for a future where Iran has managed to acquire nuclear weapons. For Iran, this means dissuading that regime from weaponizing its nuclear program and, if that fails, making preparations to deter it from brandishing or using its weapons."--Publisher's description. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Nuclear weapons|zIran. 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xGovernment|xInternational.|2bisacsh 650 7 POLITICAL SCIENCE|xInternational Relations|xGeneral. |2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 Military policy.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01021386 650 7 Nuclear weapons.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01040971 651 0 Israel|xForeign relations|zIran. 651 0 Iran|xForeign relations|zIsrael. 651 0 Israel|xMilitary policy. 651 0 Iran|xMilitary policy. 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zIsrael. 651 0 Israel|xForeign relations|zUnited States. 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zIran. 651 0 Iran|xForeign relations|zUnited States. 651 7 Iran.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204889 651 7 Israel.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204236 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 700 1 Nader, Alireza,|eauthor. 700 1 Roshan, Parisa,|eauthor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|aKaye, Dalia Dassa.|tIsrael and Iran. |dSanta Monica, CA : RAND National Defense Research Institute, [2011]|z9780833058607|w(DLC) 2011051192 |w(OCoLC)768335825 830 0 Rand Corporation monograph series. 914 ocn768418018 994 92|bCKE
