520 Even more so than today, the horse was a valuable
commodity to the everyday man or woman in the late 17th
century. Horses were used for transportation and labor and
regarded as valuable pieces of property. Because of the
expense and value of the animals, lawyers would specialize
in equine legislation to aid clients in cases where the
animals were involved.ℓ The Law of Horses details the
intricacies of equine law in Scotland and the United
Kingdom up until 1892, and contains nearly every court
case from the mid-1800s that involves horses and the
shaping of equine legislation. The volume outlines what
the law dictates in cases where horses are being bought
and sold, used as collateral for loans, left in the care
of a veterinarian or trainer, found as the cause of
damages to another’s property, and evaluated for insurance
purposes. The volume also contains complete texts of The
Veterinary Surgeons Act and the Animals Order Act of 1886
in addition to groundbreaking legislation and court
decisions that made significant strides in laws against
animal cruelty and promoting equine safety.
