Summary This novel was the first in Baum's ten-book Aunt Jane's Nieces series. Baum wished to market the books to the same audience who adored Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In doing do, the series awarded him with the second biggest success of his career (following the Oz novels).ℓ The pseudonym Edith Van Dyne was used for all ten of the Aunt Jane's Nieces novels and was adopted from the publishing company's idea that in order to write successful young adult fiction for females, Baum would have to mask his male identity. The book series was a popular graduation gift for girls in the early 1920s, and even outsold the Oz books for a few months before Baum's death. The novels were largely forgotten by the early 1930s, but the adventures of Louise, Elizabeth and Patsy will live on in Baum's canon.
