Summary |
The Spag [Released] and The Spag [unreleased]. A portrait of growing up as a newly arrived migrant in 1950s Melbourne, revolving around Giovannino, a young Italian paperboy. When his father dies, his mother wants to return to Italy, but Giovannino wants to stay, despite always being the 'dago' and 'spag'. This film expresses the anguish of the migrant experience. The short drama THE SPAG (c.1960-2) reveals Mangiameles keen eye for visual poetry and the strong humanism of his concern for his characters. |

The unreleased version has an adult as its central character, experiencing anti-Italian prejudice and hatred in the back streets of Carlton. When it was suggested that he upgrade the film, Mangiamele re-wrote and re-filmed it with a child in the leading role. Some story elements are the same, and the theme of ethnic prejudice is the same, but the two "versions" are essentially different films. |

Please note that the soundtrack of the Unreleased version is not complete and is at times technically crude. As with all of Mangiameles films, the soundtracks were post-synched, and he did not record sound on location. |
