Summary Upon its publication in 1865, the short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" propelled Twain into the national spotlight and established his reputation as an up-and-coming humorist. In this 1869 collection (and early edition of his first published book), dive into the hilarious tale of a frog-jumping contest that he wrote during a stay in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Other early sketches and essays featured include "Brief Biographical Sketch of George Washington," a humorous account of Washington's early life, and "A Page from a Californian Almanac," a parody of mid-nineteenth century weather reporting.
