Drawing on the Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Gyekye's notion of "amphibious personhood," Kwame Edwin Otu argues that sasso embody and articulate amphibious subjectivity in their self-making, creating an identity that moves beyond the homogenizing impulses of western categories of gender and sexuality. Such subjectivity simultaneously unsettles claims purported by the Christian heteronationalist state and LGBT+ human rights organizations that Ghana is predominantly heterosexual or homophobic. Weaving together personal interactions with sasso, participant observation, autoethnography, archival sources, essays from African and African-diasporic literature, and critical analyses of documentaries such as the BBC's The World's Worst Place to Be Gay, Amphibious Subjects is an ethnographic meditation on how Africa is configured as the "heart of homophobic darkness" in transnational LGBT+ human rights imaginaries" --|cProvided by publisher. 588 Description based on print version record and CIP data provided by publisher; resource not viewed. 650 0 Sexual minority community|zGhana|zAccra. 650 0 Effeminacy|zGhana|zAccra. 650 0 Human rights|xAnthropological aspects|zGhana|zAccra. 650 0 Sexual minorities|zGhana|zAccra. 650 0 Gender identity|zGhana|zAccra. 650 0 Homosexuality|zGhana|zAccra. 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural & Social. |2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / LGBTQ Studies / Bisexual Studies. |2bisacsh 650 7 Effeminacy.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01764771 650 7 Gender identity.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00939593 650 7 Homosexuality.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00959755 650 7 Human rights|xAnthropological aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01751356 650 7 Sexual minorities.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01202158 650 7 Sexual minority community.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01910176 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural.|2bisacsh 651 7 Ghana|zAccra.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205301 776 08 |iPrint version:|aOtu, Kwame Edwin, 1983-|tAmphibious subjects|dOakland, California : University of California Press, [2022]|z9780520381858|w(DLC) 2022000340 830 0 New sexual worlds ;|v2. 914 on1296689665 947 MARCIVE Processed 2022/11/04 994 92|bCKE
