Summary Roland's pursuit of the elusive Man in Black across the endless Mohaine desert becomes even more treacherous when he is attacked by a ravenous pack of desert dogs and vampiric dust devils when he is at his weakest!
With the massacre of Tull behind him, Roland crosses the Mohaine desert in pursuit of the Man in Black. At the Way Station, he encounters a boy named Jake Chambers, who speaks of New York City and movies and sidewalks and skyscrapers--things from a different time, and a different world. Jake also knows the Man in Black. Jake is alive now, in Mid-World; but it was the Man in Black, in the other world, who killed him. Jake will make the perfect companion for the gunslinger because, like all the others that have stood by Roland, he will probably die, too--again.
