With the massacre of Tull behind him, Roland crosses the Mohaine desert in pursuit of the Man in Black. At the Way Station, he encounters a boy named Jake Chambers, who speaks of New York City and movies and sidewalks and skyscrapers--things from a different time, and a different world. Jake also knows the Man in Black. Jake is alive now, in Mid-World; but it was the Man in Black, in the other world, who killed him. Jake will make the perfect companion for the gunslinger because, like all the others that have stood by Roland, he will probably die, too--again. |
