Summary Accompanied by numerous footnotes and quotations from the works of Luther and his contemporaries, this scholarly work—written from a decidedly Protestant point of view—details the famous Diet of Worms, one of the most pivotal events of Luther's career. Luther had already been excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church for his teaching of "sola fide," or justification by faith alone, but that did not silence him. The Diet of Worms was an assembly in which the secular authorities of the Holy Roman Empire determined what to do with Luther. When he refused to retract his teachings, the assembly issued the Edict of Worms, which made it a crime for anyone in Germany to give Luther food or shelter. It also permitted anyone to kill Luther without legal consequence.
