By the mid-twentieth century, however, it was more common for the two disciplines to be considered distinct professional fields, with architecture having little to do with studio craft. The Allied Arts investigates the history of the complex relationship between craft and architecture by examining the intersection of these two areas in Canadian public buildings. Sandra Alfoldy explains the challenges facing the development of the field of public craft and documents the largely ignored public craft commissions of the post-war era in Canada. The book highlights the global concerns of material, scale, form, ornament, and identity shared by architects and craftspeople. It also examines the ways in which the allied arts are mediated by institutions and the fragility of craft commissions once considered an integral part of the built environment. Considering a wide range of craftspeople, materials, and forms - from the ceramics of Jack Sures and Jordi Bonnet to the textile work of Mariette Rousseau Vermette and Carole Sabiston - Alfoldy celebrates the successes of architectural craftsmanship. The first work of its kind, The Allied Arts develops ideas about the complex relationship between architecture and craft that reach well beyond national boundaries. 546 English. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription MasterFILE Reference Collection 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Architecture|zCanada|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Handicraft|zCanada|xHistory|y20th century. 650 0 Decorative arts|zCanada|xHistory|y20th century. 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xCriticism.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xHistory|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xRegional.|2bisacsh 650 7 ARCHITECTURE|xHistory|xContemporary (1945- )|2bisacsh 650 7 Architecture.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00813346 650 7 Decorative arts.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00889315 650 7 Handicraft.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00950959 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204310 655 0 Electronic books. 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aWaite, P.B.|tAllied Arts : Architecture and Craft in Postwar Canada.|dMontreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, ©2014 830 0 McGill-Queen's/Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation studies in art history. 914 ocn812837242 994 92|bSTJ
