Memoir. Women's Studies. Still sassy, Doris Gregory takes the reader back over seventy years to when she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps during WWII. Her memoir allows us to travel with her across the Atlantic at the height of the U-boat infestation and to take refuge in underground shelters while bombs fall on London. Unlike most memoirs of the war that focus on battles, Gregory shows the everyday mundane activities of office life, working under some less-than-brilliant supervisors. Gregory transforms what could have been a dull soldier's life into one of small adventures: cycling along traffic- free roads through southern England, the midlands and Scottish lowlands, hopping on the ferry to Ulster, slipping into neutral, forbidden Éire, and looking into the gun barrel of an angry German sentry. Although at times the war weighs heavily upon her, the author's optimism, enthusiasm and sense of humor permeate this memoir, full of laughter and surprises. -- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 590 eBooks on EBSCOhost|bEBSCO eBook Subscription MAS Reference Collection 600 10 Gregory, Doris,|d1921- 600 17 Gregory, Doris,|d1921-|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01966029 610 10 Canada.|bCanadian Army.|bCanadian Women's Army Corps |vBiography. 610 20 University of British Columbia|xStudents|vBiography. 610 27 University of British Columbia.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00541216 611 27 World War (1939-1945)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01180924 648 7 1939-1945|2fast 650 0 World War, 1939-1945|vPersonal narratives, Canadian. 650 0 Women soldiers|zCanada|vBiography. 650 7 Students.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01136041 650 7 Women soldiers.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01178559 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Historical.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY / Europe / Western.|2bisacsh 651 7 Canada.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204310 655 7 Biography.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 Personal narratives|vCanadian.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01424090 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGregory, Doris, 1921-|tHow I won the war for the allies.|dVancouver : Ronsdale Press, 2014 |z9781553803188 914 ocn863768304 994 92|bSTJ
