Gordon argues that the trope of passivity aims to guarantee a disinterested self in a culture that was increasingly convinced that every deliberate action involves calculating one's own interest. Gordon traces the origins of such ideas from their roots in the nonconformist religious tradition to their flowering in one of the central texts of eighteenth- century literature, Samuel Richardson's Clarissa."-- Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 648 7 1500-1799|2fast 650 0 English literature|y18th century|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Passivity (Psychology) in literature. 650 0 English literature|yEarly modern, 1500-1700|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Christianity and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y18th century. 650 0 Christianity and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y17th century. 650 0 Ethics in literature. 650 0 Self in literature. 650 0 Christianity and literature. 650 0 English literature. 650 0 English literature|yEarly modern, 1500-1700|xHistory. 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xEuropean|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 07 Passivity (Psychology) in literature.|2cct 650 07 English literature|yEarly modern, 1500-1700|xHistory and criticism.|2cct 650 07 Christianity and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y18th century.|2cct 650 07 Christianity and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y17th century.|2cct 650 07 Ethics in literature.|2cct 650 07 Self in literature.|2cct 650 07 Litterature anglaise|y18e siecle|xHistoire et critique. |2cct 650 7 Christianity and literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00859681 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00911989 650 7 English literature|xEarly modern.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01710960 650 7 Ethics in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00915860 650 7 Passivity (Psychology) in literature.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01054452 650 7 Self in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01111462 650 07 Individuum.|2swd 650 07 Literatur.|2swd 650 07 Passivität.|2swd 650 07 Protestantismus.|2swd 650 17 Letterkunde.|2gtt 650 17 Engels.|2gtt 650 17 Passiviteit.|2gtt 650 17 Christelijke ethiek.|2gtt 650 17 Zelf.|2gtt 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204623 651 7 Englisch.|2swd 653 0 Litteratur|aEngelsk, amerikansk litteratur. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aGordon, Scott Paul, 1965-|tPower of the passive self in English literature, 1640-1770.|dCambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2002 |z0521810051|w(DLC) 2001043612|w(OCoLC)48013180 914 ocm56314949 994 93|bGTK
