Summary At the time the Roman Empire supplanted the failed Republic, the Rhine River marked Rome's northern frontier in western Europe, until Emperor Augustus tried to push the boundary east to the Elbe. This program focuses on the events during the 1st through 4th centuries and traces the movements of the Goths and the tribes of Germania. Includes the battle in the year 9 when Arminius, leader of the Germanic resistance to Roman colonization, destroyed three Roman legions under Publius Varus.
"This ... four-part series takes an in-depth look at the history of Europe's wandering tribes: their migrations in search of land, their ensuing clashes with the Romans and the Huns, and their adoption, overtime, of Christianity. Dramatic reenactments, computer-generated re-creations of period architecture, maps, images of anthropological and historical artifacts, and insights from leading scholars create a compelling picture of life and death in ancient and early medieval Europe."--Container.
