London, 1955. Tony Gérard lives an uncomplicated life: he helps local tradesmen with their accounts, he listens to jazz records. And when Les Jackson of Hoxton Films needs someone to look after the company's interests- whether that's sorting out an actor's gambling debts or keeping a story out of the papers- it's Tony he calls. Tony's good at it. He's discreet and efficient. So he's not too surprised when one of Les's more glamorous stars turns to him for help when her younger brother disappears. But then events take a murderous turn- and Tony's life is no longer anything like simple, especially when someone from his more complicated past turns up.
