Summary |
This book is presented in both English and Spanish. I have been a practicing podiatric foot and ankle surgeon for 40 years. Thanks to tremendous advances in medicine, my colleagues and I can provide more options to our patients with increasingly better outcomes. Today, through a team approach, we use contemporary techniques to treat the diabetic foot. Despite these improvements, more and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes. Foot and ankle surgeons like me are seeing many more patients with increased complications from this disease. For most diabetics, though, it is the devastating possibility of limb loss that is of primary concern. The truth is that with proper management of the disease, patient compliance, and early intervention when needed, limb loss is often preventable. I wrote this book first and foremost for you-someone who lives with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease of epidemic proportions. Many of my diabetic patients come to me far less informed about the disease than they deserve. They often have a difficult time realizing the possible complications associated with diabetes. Many do not take care of themselves as well as they should. My goal is to increase awareness of how diabetes affects the foot and ankle and to reduce the frequency and extent of limb loss. I want to empower you to do everything possible to avoid unnecessary complications from diabetes, including the dreaded complication of limb loss. |
