Summary The book is mostly concerned with two families; the Cromwell and the Dodge families, but there are other characters to the book also. Tarkington concentrates on the two mothers of those families and their daughters. The setting is a pleasant suburb, early 20th century in a moderately sized town where gossip is ever present. We look at the crises that beset the parents -- and their fickle daughters, in issues regarding love, boyfriends, crushes that seem so important at the time but in the end become faded memories. The book looks at a way of life that seems a part of the distant past, where husbands/fathers were the sole breadwinners, where the mothers and their daughters never seemed to have jobs, but had plenty of time to attend to the issues that obsessed their lives -- love affairs/crushes, neighbors' and friends' infidelities and so on. Where "well meant" gossip could backfire on the person spreading it.
