520 Although Abraham Lincoln's signature accessory was his top
hat, he also wore eyeglasses. The American public was
fascinated by his eyewear, and the topic found its way
into the news numerous times. The Lincoln Financial
Foundation put together this collection of documents
regarding Abraham Lincoln's eyesight. Lincoln owned at
least two pairs of glasses, both of which are preserved
today. He wore them publicly numerous times, notably
before giving the Gettysburg Address. He cited his old age
as the reason for their necessity.
