San Juan Jr. 520 Asians have settled in every country in the Western Hemisphere; some are recent arrivals, other descendents of immigrants who arrived centuries ago. Bringing together essays by thirteen scholars from the humanities and social sciences, Displacements and Diasporas explores this genuinely transnational Asian American experience-one that crosses the Pacific and traverses the Americas from Canada to Brazil, from New York to the Caribbean. With an emphasis on anthropological and historical contexts, the essays show how the experiences of Asians across the Americas have been shaped by the social dynamics and politics of settlement locations as much as by transnational connections and the economic forces of globalization. Contributors bring new insights to the unique situations of Asian communities previously overlooked by scholars, such as Vietnamese Canadians and the Lao living in Rhode Island. Other topics include Chinese laborers and merchants in Latin America and the Caribbean, Japanese immigrants and their descendants in Brazil, Afro-Amerasians in America, and the politics of second-generation Indian American youth culture. Engaging issues of diaspora, transnational social practice and community building, gender, identity, institutionalized racism, and deterritoriality, this volume presents fresh perspectives on displacement, opening the topic up to a wider, more multidisciplinary terrain of inquiry and teaching. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Asians|zAmerica|xHistory. 650 0 Asians|zAmerica|xEthnic identity. 650 0 Asians|xMigrations. 650 0 Refugees|zAmerica|xHistory. 650 0 Immigrants|zAmerica|xHistory. 650 0 Transnationalism. 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xAnthropology|xCultural.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xDiscrimination & Race Relations.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xMinority Studies.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xEthnic Studies|xAsian American Studies. |2bisacsh 650 7 Asians.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00818693 650 7 Asians|xEthnic identity.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00818700 650 7 Asians|xMigrations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01765348 650 7 Emigration and immigration.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00908690 650 7 Ethnic relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00916005 650 7 Immigrants.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00967712 650 7 Refugees.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01092797 650 7 Transnationalism.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01154884 651 0 America|xEmigration and immigration. 651 0 Asia|xEmigration and immigration. 651 0 America|xEthnic relations. 651 7 America.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01239786 651 7 Asia.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01240495 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Anderson, Wanni W.|q(Wanni Wibulswasdi),|d1937-|eeditor. 700 1 Lee, Robert G.,|d1947-|eeditor. 776 08 |iPrint version:|tDisplacements and diasporas.|dNew Brunswick, N.J. : Rutgers University Press, ©2005 |z0813536103|z0813536111|w(DLC) 2004025322 |w(OCoLC)57003625 914 ocm64187756 994 93|bGTK
