Summary
For years reading books has been the main focus of libraries working with children. But an emphasis on literacy should include writing, as well as reading. Many children learn to read through writing, both because of the correlation between hand movement and skills, and because of the pride in having written something of their own. Hurtado provides workshops that encourage writing-- especially as part of a play program-- to help children develop better spelling and reading skills.
