Summary Ethical problems arise regularly in the career of a school counselor; and it is only through the thoughtful examination of sometimes competing values that moral and responsible decisions can be made. No matter how experienced the counselor, there will inevitably be conflicts that appear to defy resolutions. Ethics in School Counseling, by John Schulte and Donald Cochrane, goes beyond "cookbook" approaches offered in many other texts, and examines key philosophical concepts. The authors provide a set of principles that help guide school counselors through the ethical crises they face. Case histories are analyzed to illustrate the many kinds of problems that may arise in the relationships among counselors, students, parents, and teachers. Larger issues of ethical reasoning and principles are related and developed, and examples of typical dilemmas faced by school counselors are examined. One chapter critiques the professional ethics codes featured in the appendices: the standards of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association. Ethics in School Counseling will challenge counselors to rethink their approaches to problem solving. It will prove an invaluable resource for all school counselors and also for educators interested in ethical problems and solutions.
