Summary |
Between the 17th and 19th centuries, dueling became a national epidemic in the United States. Fueled by notions of misplaced honor and a vague code of chivalry, dueling was a culturally sanctioned form of murder especially prevalent in the south. One reason that dueling lasted as long as it did was because it was part of the upper class identity. This narrative of the Cash family, who were not upper class, reveals the hypocrisy of the system and how dueling, by any other name, was still murder.ℓ |
