Summary |

A trip to the heart of contemporary Cuba that summons the ghosts of the dark revolutionary past of the island. For writing a poem at eighteen in Cuba, Néstor Díaz de Villegas was accused by the State Security of being an "ideological diversionist" and sentenced to six years in a forced labor camp, from where he will leave in 1979 for Miami. Thirty-seven years later, the author returns to the island with the insight of an experienced journalist. After the resumption of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, Nestor and his wife venture into the reconstruction of an old family home in Havana, a task that becomes a metaphor for the restoration of a bankrupt nation. With his Cuban childhood as a ghostly backdrop, Díaz de Villegas weaves a tapestry of dissidents and hustlers, lost relatives and new friends, ruined homes and sordid palaces. Meditation on life and death, extravagant travel notebook, political treatise and historical narration, De dónde son los gusanos is also the chronicle of the slow flourishing of a new entrepreneurial spirit in Cuba, as well as the collaboration between expatriates and residents of the island in the common cause of redeeming the country from the ravages of totalitarianism. |
