Summary Love under fire: the story of Bertha and Potter Palmer tells the inspirational true story of Chicago's first power couple, Bertha and Potter Palmer. Potter Palmer is the man who inspired Marshall Field to greatness (and in turn, Harry Gordon Selfridge, the inspiration behind the current PBS Masterpiece series Mr. Selfridge); who invented many of the business practices we take for granted today (liberal exchange policies, "the customer is always right," dazzling window displays); and who gave Chicago the grand Palmer House hotel, which was originally built as a wedding present for his young bride. Bertha was a force in her own right, and it could be argued she had an even greater impact on the world at large than her husband did. Bertha was a supporter of workers' rights and women's rights in particular, long before the rest of the world caught on. She worked tirelessly during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition to highlight the role of women in society, clashing with Daniel Burnham in selecting a young female architect to design the Women's Building, and she was the first woman to appear before Congress to petition the government for funds. She's also known as the woman who introduced the works of Monet, Cassat, Rodin and Degas to America; founded the Chicago Women's Club in the 1880s(!); and last, but not least, introducing the Brownie to the culinary world. Together, Bertha and Palmer were instrumental in helping Chicago rise from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire.
