Summary |
Sons and Lovers tells the story of Paul Morel, a young painter. Growing up, Paul has a volatile family life. His coal-miner father is abusive toward his mother, physically beating her and degrading her. Distraught over her marriage, Paul’s mother turns to her children for comfort, especially her eldest child, William. Eventually, William moves away from home and tragically dies of an illness a few years later. Heartbroken, the mother turns to Paul for comfort. Paul and his mother grow incredibly close and depend on each other to survive. As Paul grows up, he attempts to distance himself from the affection of his mother, and he falls in love with a farmer’s daughter, Miriam. Paul’s mother does not approve of Miriam, and Paul becomes conflicted about how he feels about the young girl. Soon, Paul meets the liberal and free-spirited Clara, who encourages his relationship with Miriam. Paul, however, begins to fall for Clara. Their love cannot be, asℓClara is married. In the end, Paul’s mother dies, and Paul ends up alone. |
