Summary Life-Cycle of Structures and Infrastructure Systems contains the lectures and papers presented at IALCCE 2023- The Eighth International Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering, held at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, 2-6 July, 2023. This book contains the full papers of 514 contributions presented at IALCCE 2023, including the Fazlur R. Khan Plenary Lecture, nine Keynote Lectures, and 504 technical papers from 45 countries. The papers cover recent advances and cutting-edge research in the field of life-cycle civil engineering, including emerging concepts and innovative applications related to life-cycle design, assessment, inspection, monitoring, repair, maintenance, rehabilitation, and management of structures and infrastructure systems under uncertainty. Major topics covered include life-cycle safety, reliability, risk, resilience and sustainability, life-cycle damaging processes, life-cycle design and assessment, life-cycle inspection and monitoring, life-cycle maintenance and management, life-cycle performance of special structures, life-cycle cost of structures and infrastructure systems, and life-cycle-oriented computational tools, among others. This Open Access Book provides both an up-to-date overview of the field of life-cycle civil engineering and significant contributions to the process of making more rational decisions to mitigate the life-cycle risk and improve the life-cycle reliability, resilience, and sustainability of structures and infrastructure systems exposed to multiple natural and human-made hazards in a changing climate. It will serve as a valuable reference to all concerned with life-cycle of civil engineering systems, including students, researchers, practicioners, consultants, contractors, decision makers, and representatives of managing bodies and public authorities from all branches of civil engineering.
Biography Fabio Biondini is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He is Founding Member and Executive Board member of the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE) and Exceutive Committee Member of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS). He is the author/co-author of over 300 scientific publications in the fields of life-cycle civil engineering, structural reliability, structural optimization, and earthquake engineering. He is the recipient of several honors and awards from several professional organizations, including IABMAS, IALCCE, IABSE, IFIP. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE. Dr. Dan M FRANGOPOL is the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture at Lehigh University. Before joining Lehigh University in 2006, he was Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he is now Professor Emeritus. His main research interests are in the development and application of probabilistic concepts and methods to civil and marine engineering. He is recognized as a leader in the field of life-cycle engineering of civil and marine structures under various types of hazards. Dr. FRANGOPOL is the Founding President of the International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE). He has authored/co-authored 3 books, more than 50 book chapters, and over 420 articles in archival journals including 11 prize winning papers. He is the Founding Editor of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering and of the Book Series Structures and Infrastructures. He is the recipient of several medals, awards, and prizes, from ASCE, IABSE, IASSAR, ISHMII, SAE and other professional organizations, such as the Newmark, Freudenthal, Housner, Lin, Khan, Mufti, and Croes Medals, the Ang, Howard, and Moisseiff Awards, the Munro, Noble, Reese, and Wellington Prizes, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education (OPAL), and the Civil Engineer of the Year Award. He delivered many plenary and keynote lectures at international conferences and several named lectures and has served as a consultant or advisor to numerous companies. He holds 4 honorary doctorates and 14 honorary professorships from major universities. He is an Elected Member of the US National Academy of Construction, a Foreign Member of the Academy of Europe (London), a Foreign Associate of the Engineering Academy of Japan, a Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, an Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy, an Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, and a Distinguished Member of ASCE. Jose TURMO (Spain, 1974) got his 6-year program degree in Civil Engineer (1998) from University of Cantabria (Santander, Spain) and his PhD (2003) in Construction Engineering from Technical University of Catalonia BarcelonaTech- UPC (Barcelona, Spain). At the moment, he is Professor in the School of Civil Engineering in Barcelona, BarcelonaTech (Spain), where he teaches Construction Engineering and Bridges. His area of expertise is Construction and Maintenance of Concrete Bridges and Structures and Structural System Identification. Topics as different as structural behaviour of externally prestressed concrete bridges, applications of high performance concrete, shear strength of concrete structures, dynamics of cable suspended bridges, structural analysis of bridge construction, structural maintenance or model updating has been addressed by him, as well as improvement of health and safety and environmental issues of bridge construction. He has done several research stays as a postdoc, being appointed as Visiting Faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2005), Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, San Diego, USA (2006) and Kwang-Hua Visiting Professor (2010) and High End Foreign Expert (2014-2016) at the Department of Bridge Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
