When newcomers first arrived in the 1850s, they hastened to assemble the familiar cohort of cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, and other animals that defined European agriculture. This, in turn, contributed to the dispossession of the Native residents of the area. However, just as these animals were used to create a Euro-American city, the elimination of these same animals from Seattle was key to the creation of the new middle-class neighborhoods of the twentieth century. As dogs and cats came to symbolize home and family, Seattleites' relationship with livestock became distant and exploitative, demonstrating the deep social contradictions that characterize the modern American metropolis. Throughout Seattle's history, people have sorted animals into categories and into places as a way of asserting power over animals, other people, and property. In this book, Frederick Brown explores the dynamic, troubled relationship humans have with animals. In so doing he challenges us to acknowledge the role of animals of all sorts in the making and remaking of cities"-- Provided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 650 0 Animals|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|xHistory. 650 0 Animals|xSocial aspects|zWashington (State)|zSeattle |xHistory. 650 0 Human-animal relationships|zWashington (State)|zSeattle |xHistory. 650 0 City and town life|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|xHistory. 650 0 Social change|zWashington (State)|zSeattle|xHistory. 650 0 Urban ecology (Biology)|zWashington (State)|zSeattle |xHistory. 650 0 Urban ecology (Sociology)|zWashington (State)|zSeattle |xHistory. 650 7 SCIENCE|xLife Sciences|xZoology|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 Animals.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00809468 650 7 Animals|xSocial aspects.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00809537 650 7 City and town life.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00862081 650 7 Ecology.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00901476 650 7 Human-animal relationships.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00963482 650 7 Social change.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01122310 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919811 650 7 Urban ecology (Biology)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01162404 650 7 Urban ecology (Sociology)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01733718 650 7 HISTORY / United States / State & Local / Pacific Northwest (OR, WA)|2bisacsh 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|xEnvironmental conditions. 651 0 Seattle (Wash.)|xSocial conditions. 651 7 Washington (State)|zSeattle.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204940 655 0 Electronic book. 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aBrown, Frederick L., 1962-|tCity is more than human.|dSeattle : University of Washington Press, [2016]|z9780295999340|w(DLC) 2016020377|w(OCoLC)946461779 830 0 Weyerhaeuser environmental book. 914 ocn959979378 994 92|bCKE
