Summary Pictorial guide to eastern towns which retain some of their pre-Revolutionary flavor.
Contents "The 50 communities described and pictured in this book were all small towns at the time of the American Revolution and most of them still are today, if we concede that a place with fewer than 20,000 people can be classed as a town. The exceptions are Danvers, Lexington, Dedham, and Northampton in Massachusetts, Wethersfield in Connecticut, and Old Salem, now part of Winston-Salem in North Carolina. Even though their populations are moderately higher, they were included because they do not give the impression of being large when one visits the area where their older buildings are located. Of the 50 towns, 11 still have populations of less than 1000, and well over half have fewer than 5000. The 11 smaller places are: Wiscasset and York Village in Maine; Manchester in Vermont; Washington Crossing in Pennsylvania; Oxford and Sandy Spring in Maryland; Waterford, Jamestown, and Yorktown in Virginia; and Bath Town and Brunswick in North Carolina. Two -- Jamestown and Brunswick -- are no longer inhabited. All are, or were, bona fide towns, except perhaps Washington Crossing, and even that hamlet now has a post office" -- Introduction.
