Summary Stories Illustrating the Catechismℓis a collection of stories that are very much representative of Mary Martha Sherwood’s style and themes. The book contains a series of stories dealing with Christian religious teachings and doctrine. The stories are especially important in Sherwood’s body of work because many of them are set in India, where Sherwood lived for years with her husband. The stories depict domestic life in India as well as scenes from everyday Indian life. While in India, Sherwood came to know Henry Martyn, a chaplain at her Indian church. Soon after Martyn left India, Sherwood was inspired to write this collection of stories. Henry Martyn’s presence can be felt throughout the stories, especially in the character of Mr. King. Sherwood purportedly based the character of Mr. King on Henry Martyn. This revised edition ofℓStories for Sundays Illustrating the Catechismℓcontains Biblical annotations throughout, which help to reinforce the Christian themes that run throughout the book.
