Summary "Rainbow Bird & Monster Man", the story of Tony Lock is an affront to the opinions we harbour of ourselves, our impressions of childhood, the very usefulness of legal process and indeed the way our society works. Set in small town Australia, it is a story of murder, revenge, power and denial that charts an individuals struggle for justice and respite from a mental torment that has plagued him since he was a little boy. That little boy was Tony Lock and he was sexually abused for ten years of his life. "Rainbow Bird and Monster Man" is a tragedy of the most epic and frightening dimensions. Thirty years later, he decided to do something about it. Denied a hearing, he took the law into his own hands. The fact that he is still alive to share his story is a gift to the nation and a reminder that the smallest and the weakest must be protected. This is a story of childhood but also an adult journey through the coldest and darkest night, searching for a peace that will not show itself, a justice that will not be delivered and a healing that will not begin. Step by step the tragedy unfolds and the final murderous scenes are played out. What we learn from Tony Lock is not just the unravelling of a painful and frightening journey but a narrative woven from fragments of his own mental illness, drunkenness, violence and despair. This harrowing story challenges us on many levels. Not only will Tony take us to a place where the spending of a mans life seems irrelevant, but he will describe the mental state of the man who held the axe and the rainbow bird which ensured a little boy's survival.
